Ms. Lappen has presented an excellent summary of the benefits of WTE and the challenges that lay ahead for the industry. It is ironic that she mentions the State of California as promoting WTE, yet the state currently does not recognize power from a WTE facility as being renewable. Ms. Lappen's article should be read by every state legislator in Sacramento. We need to push hard to get this situation turned around.

Well written and straightforward yet comprehensive explanation of the benefits of this crucial technology. There is a significant need for policymakers in particular to understand the environmental impacts of WTE not in a vacuum, but in relation to other options for electricity generation and waste disposal. It is disappointing to see that unfounded environmental critiques have found their way into official positions such as New York's state RPS. Such a position recognizes neither the unique benefits of avoiding landfill methane generation and offsetting demand for baseload coal-fired electricity (something wind and solar power cannot accomplish) nor the substantial and successful efforts of the WTE sector to minimize negative environmental impacts associated with waste combustion.

A great, informative article that pulls no punches and tells it as it is.
We must use WTE to reduce our reliance on imported fuels and to stop using polluting landfills.

This is an excellent and well reasoned article. Everyone should read it.

I have worked in this field for 35 years and found no better solution than this recommended combination of clean burning and recycling.

Whenever this issue has been put to the voters (to the best of my knowledge) it has beeen chosen, even though it is never the cheapest solution.
